A 27-year-old man, Mubarak Saidu , was on Friday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly protesting the detention of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. Saidu, of Kano State , was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and inciting disturbance.
The prosecutor, Mr Daniel Apochi, told the court that the defendant was arrested on June 23, after an information alert to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abuja. Apochi said that the defendant, with one other now at large, gathered to hold illegal protest at the mosque of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). The prosecutor said that the two were protesting the continual detention of the Shi’a Muslim Cleric, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky . He said that they had inscriptions with Free Palestine and Free El-Zakzaky, adding that their intention was to cause or disturb public peace. According to Apochi, during police investigation, the defendant confessed to the offence. He said that the offences were contrary to Sections 97 and114 of the Penal Code. Saidu pleaded not guilty and the judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko , admitted him to bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum. The case was adjourned until Aug.3 for hearing.
