Justice B.O. Quadri of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday granted 32-year-old Okafor Fabian, docked for alleged possession of 3.4kg of cannabis sativa, bail in the sum of N5million. The judge also ordered the defendant to provide two sureties in like sum, who must swear an affidavit of means, have landed property in Abuja and produce three years tax clearance.
He also ordered that the original copy of certificate of occupancy of the surety must be submitted to the court’s registrar. The judge added that one of surety must be a civil servant of grade level 15,while the residence of both sureties must be confirmed by the court’s registrar. Quadri adjourned the matter until Oct. 11, for commencement of trial. Earlier at the resumed hearing, counsel to the defendant, Pascal Ugwu, had informed the court of a bail application for the defendant. He urged the court to grant the defendant bail, adding that the defendant would always be available to face his trial. The prosecuting counsel, Mike Kassa, however, did not oppose the bail application. It will be recalled that the defendant was first arraigned on June 29, 2016 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for alleged possession of 3.4kg of cannabis sativa (a.k.a Indian hemp). He had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
